Applications are invited from scientists at post-graduate and early post-doctoral level for the first lecture course in this new series, entitled “Microbial Genomics and Secondary Metabolites” to be held at the Mediterranean Institute for Life Sciences (MedILS), Split, Croatia, June 23 – July 1 2007, by kind invitation of the Director, Miroslav Radman.
Co-directors:
David Hopwood, John Innes Centre, Norwich, UK
Julian Davies, University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada
Local organiser:
Duška Vujaklija, Rudjer Boskovic Institute, Zagreb, Croatia
Content and format of the course
Topics to be covered will include:
- isolation and screening of secondary metabolite-producing microorganisms
- metagenomics and heterologous pathway expression
- genetic manipulation of antibiotic producers
- genome sequencing, annotation and comparative genomics
- characterisation of biosynthetic pathways in silico and experimentally
- pathway engineering and combinatorial biosynthesis
- functional genomics, especially proteomic analysis
- antibiotic resistance and its avoidance
A typical working day will include lectures in the morning, small group discussions/ workshops in the afternoon, and guest and participant talks and poster sessions in the evening; all participants will be asked to bring a poster. One day will be devoted to an all-day excursion to the island of Brač. Housed on part of the grounds of the Villa Dalmatia, one of Tito’s former summer retreats, MedILS is a perfect venue for such summer schools, with excellent facilities for lectures, discussions, accommodation and meals, and relaxation, including swimming, and a 30 minute walk – or a short bus or bike ride – from the historic centre of Split.
Costs
Participants will be accommodated in twin rooms on the MedILS campus and all meals will be provided there. The total charge by MedILS for the eight days board and lodging, including the two parties, will be 480 Euro per person, with a small additional charge for the excursion. There will be an additional non-refundable registration fee of 150 Euro payable in advance. The course will be limited to about 30 participants. There are no dedicated grants for attendance, but it is likely that applicants will be able to apply to FEMS (http://www.fems-microbiology.org/website/nl/ default.asp) as well as to national learned societies.
