FEBS Practical Course on Protein interaction modules

April 18th - April 25th, 2009

Abstract:

The course is aimed at students and postdocs involved in analyses of protein-protein interactions and formation of large protein complexes in cells. There is an increasing awareness of the importance of specific recognitions of post-translational modifications in regulating variety of biological processes from the plasma membrane to the nucleus.
Methods used to study protein-protein interactions are frequently required in many laboratories Moreover, several proteomic (tagged-linked purification of associated proteins coupled to mass spectrometry) and interaction screens (yeast two hybrid screens classical and membrane specific) are more commonly utilized in individual laboratories. However, high sensitivity and specificity of these assays are quite difficult to set up in the individual laboratories. It is thus essential to provide a training course to young scientists, which will enable them to acquire expertise and skills to get high sensitivity and reproducibility in these techniques. Dissemination of the relevant methodology to laboratories not specialized in protein modification systems will hopefully contribute to lowering the activation barrier for undertaking this type of experiments.
We have created a network of different specialists in protein interaction studies in the fields of biochemistry, biophysics, proteomics and structural biology. Our main aim is to transfer our knowledge to new generations of European scientists. In addition, we are particularly motivated to enable other laboratories in Europe to use these techniques and to set up the standards and “quality control” in this relatively new scientific field.
Content: Practical work 60%, lectures 15%, discussion 15% and participants presentations 10%.
