Hottest Topics in Protein Research

July 19th – July 26th, 2008

Abstract:

The word protein comes from the Greek πρώτα (”prota”), meaning “of primary importance” and these molecules were first described and named by the Swedish chemist Jöns Jakob Berzelius in 1838. Since then, our knowledge and understanding of proteins has grown, and new research methods have become available. This workshop will try to present some of the latest approaches in protein research, in vitro , in vivo and in sillico . It is intended primarily for PhD students with some lab experience, to help them see what can be done with their proteins, and how. The participants will be introduced to various methods in protein research, and in basic bioinformatic skills required for protein research.

Speakers:

Fumiyo Ikeda, Mediterranean Institute for Life Sciences, Split, Croatia
Boris Maček, Max-Planck-Institute for Biochemistry, Munich, Germany
Oda Stoevesandt, The Babraham Institute, Cambridge, UK
Sanja Tomić, Rudjer Boskovic Institute, Zagreb, Croatia
Timo Zimmermann, Centre for Genomic Regulation, Barcelona, Spain
Barbara Marte , Senior Editor of Nature Magazine, UK

Prerequisites:

The workshop is open for Ph.D. students from Medicine, Biology, Chemistry or Computer Sciences with basic background knowledge in protein structure and function, and with computer familiarity.

The workshop will be centered on protein research and will be useful to anyone interested in studying proteins. Topics that will be presented by the invited speakers include protein-protein interactions, protein modeling, QSAR, Y2H, signaling, protein chips methodology, affinity proteomics, MS, live cell imaging and confocal microscopy techniques.

Fee:

350 EUR before May 1st

500 EUR for late registration
The fee includes 7 days of full-board accommodation with 3 meals (+coffee/snacks) per day.

Lack of financial support should not prevent applying! Fellowships for participants are available. Applicants seeking a fellowship should within the letter of motivation explain reasons for applying for a fellowship.

Application:

Application documents should include your CV, a letter of motivation, an abstract for oral/poster presentation and a letter of recommendation.
